Marrakech

Marrakech is where we are based, in Gueliz, and where almost all of our tours begin. The Almoravids founded the city in 1070–72, and its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985.

What to see

• The Koutoubia mosque, whose 77 m minaret is the landmark of the city. Non-Muslims see it from outside.
• Jemaa el-Fna, the great square of storytellers, musicians and food stalls, on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage.
• The Saadian Tombs, the royal necropolis sealed off for centuries and found again from the air in 1917.
• The Bahia Palace, with its 19th-century courtyards, tiles and painted cedar ceilings, and the Ben Youssef madrasa.
• Jardin Majorelle and, next to it, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum (closed on Wednesdays).
• The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, founded in 1558.

• Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer afternoons are very hot. See the best time to visit Morocco.
• On a clear day you can see the snow on the High Atlas from the city in the cooler months.
