Agadir

Agadir is Morocco's main beach resort, on the Atlantic in the south-west. The old town was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 29 February 1960, and the modern city was rebuilt south of it, with wide streets and a long seafront.

What to see

• The beach and its seafront promenade, about 10 km long.
• The kasbah of Agadir Oufella on the hill above the port, badly damaged in 1960 and restored, with views over the bay.
• The Souss-Massa National Park, about half an hour south, one of the last refuges of the critically endangered northern bald ibis, with flamingos and other birds on its estuaries.
• Taghazout, the surf village up the coast to the north.
