Desert tours

Two sand seas are within reach of Marrakech. Erg Chebbi, at Merzouga, has dunes of up to about 150 m and is reached by road. Erg Chegaga, about 50–60 km beyond the village of M'Hamid, has no paved road at all and is quieter and wilder.

Every desert tour we run is private: your own vehicle and driver from Marrakech, a camel ride into the dunes and a night in a desert camp. For a closer, stony desert without a night away, see the Agafay day trip.

Which desert tour?

  • 3 days is the shortest way to sleep in the Sahara. Merzouga is about 550 km from Marrakech, so two of the three days are long drives.
  • 5 days covers the same dunes with time for Telouet, the Skoura oasis and a night in a village on the way back.
  • The camel trek is for walkers: three days on foot with a camel team to Erg Chegaga.
  • Only have a day? The Agafay desert is 37 km from Marrakech. It is stony, not sandy: read Agafay vs the Sahara before you choose.
