Essaouira is the easy escape from Marrakech to the Atlantic: whitewashed walls, a working fishing port and a steady sea breeze. It was known as Mogador until the 1960s, and its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?
185 km by road, about 2 h 45 of driving without stops. The road runs almost in a straight line, and in the past Essaouira served as the harbour for Marrakech.
Is there a train?
No. There is no railway to Essaouira. The public option is the bus: Supratours and CTM both run from Marrakech, and the trip takes around three hours. Check the current timetable when you book, as departure times change. For a day trip, a driver gives you more hours in Essaouira and the freedom to stop on the way.
What to see in a day
- The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- The ramparts: the Sqala du Port by the harbour and the Sqala de la Kasbah along the sea wall.
- The fishing port, still one of Morocco’s main fishing harbours, with sardines coming in on the boats.
- The beach and the wind: Essaouira sits in the path of strong trade winds, so it is breezy much of the year.
- Argan: Essaouira is a centre of argan oil production, and argan trees grow around the town.
Tips
- Bring a light jacket even in summer: the sea wind can feel cool after Marrakech.
- If one day feels short, Essaouira is worth a night.
