Most people climb Toubkal in two days from Imlil. This route takes four days to reach the foot of the mountain, circling through the valleys and over the Aguelzim pass, so you arrive at the refuge acclimatised and summit on the fifth morning.
Toubkal is 4,167 m, the highest peak in North Africa. A licensed guide is required on the mountain, and ours leads the whole trek with a mule team and a cook.

Day by day
Day 1 · Marrakech – Asni – Aguersioual – Tizi n'Oudite – Id Issa
Drive via Asni to meet the mules and cook, then climb from Aguersioual to Tizi n'Oudite and down to Id Issa.
Day 2 · Id Issa – Tizi n'Taghrourt – Tizgi
An early start over a pass of about 2,000 m and down into a wide valley of small villages, then up again to Tizgi.
Day 3 · Tizgi – Tizi n'Tagdalt – Azzaden – Azib Tamsoult
A morning climb over a high pass, lunch by the Azzaden river, then up to the summer pastures of Azib Tamsoult among the peaks.
Day 4 · Tamsoult – Aguelzim pass – Toubkal refuge
The hardest day: a long, steady climb to the Aguelzim pass (about 3,500 m) with the first close views of Toubkal, then down to the refuge.
Day 5 · Toubkal summit – Imlil – Marrakech
Leave at first light for the summit, back to the refuge for lunch, then down the valley to Imlil and the drive to Marrakech.

Good to know
- You need good fitness and some mountain walking experience. Summit day is long.
- From November to April there can be snow and ice high on Toubkal, which needs crampons and changes the plan.
