Merzouga is the village at the western edge of Erg Chebbi, the big dune field most people mean when they say “the Sahara in Morocco”. From Marrakech it is 556 km by road, about 10 hours of driving without a single stop. That number decides almost everything about how to plan the trip.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
We measured the usual route leg by leg. Times are pure driving, with no stops for photos, lunch or fuel, so real days are longer.

The route
The road leaves Marrakech on the N9 and climbs into the High Atlas to the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The sign at the top says 2,260 m; a GPS measurement in 2022 put it closer to 2,205 m. The road was built along an old caravan trail in 1936 and is full of hairpin bends, and snow can fall on the pass from November to March.
On the other side you drop to Ouarzazate, then follow the valleys east through Boumalne Dadès and Tinghir, the town at the mouth of the Todra Gorge. The last stretch crosses flat stony desert to Rissani and Merzouga.
Every way to get there
With a driver or a tour
The easiest way, because someone else handles ten hours of mountain road and the stops are chosen for you. A private tour also lets you break the drive where you want. This is how our desert tours work.
By bus
Supratours, the bus company of the national railway ONCF, runs one direct bus a day. It leaves the Supratours station behind Marrakech railway station at 08:30 and takes about 12 hours with its rest stops. A one-way ticket costs around 260 to 280 MAD. You can buy tickets at the station or on oncf-voyages.ma, and it is worth booking a day or two ahead in busy months. Times and fares change, so check them when you book.
By plane
The nearest airport with regular flights is Errachidia (ERH). From there it is 124 km, a little over two hours, by road to Merzouga. Flights from Marrakech to Errachidia are few and change by season, so check current schedules before building a plan around them.
Driving yourself
Possible with a hire car. Plan to split the drive, avoid the Tichka pass after dark, and keep an eye on the weather in winter.
Two days or three?
A two-day trip from Marrakech means roughly ten hours of driving on the way out and ten hours back, with one short evening in the dunes in between. It can be done, but you spend most of it in the car.
Three days is the minimum we recommend. The drive is split in two, so you arrive in Merzouga with time for the dunes before dark and a night in a desert camp. If you have more time, four or five days lets you add the gorges on foot or return a different way.
Is Merzouga worth it?
If you want real Sahara dunes, yes. Erg Chebbi’s dunes rise up to 150 m above the surrounding stony desert, and the dune field runs about 28 km north to south and 5 to 7 km across, right along the Algerian border. Camel trips go out to camps on the edges of the dunes, and you can climb a dune for sunrise.
If you only have a day, the long drive is not worth it. A closer desert landscape, such as Agafay near Marrakech, fits a single day better, but it is a stony desert, not a sea of dunes.
When to go
October to April is the most comfortable time, with mild days. Summer is very hot in the desert, and winter nights are cold, so bring a warm layer whatever the month. More on this in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
