Can you see the desert from Marrakech? It depends which desert you mean. Agafay is close and easy. The Sahara’s sand dunes are far away and worth the journey. They are very different places.

Agafay: the desert next door
Agafay lies about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, 40 minutes to an hour away by car. It is a stone desert, not a sand one: rolling rocky hills and dry riverbeds, with the High Atlas on the horizon on clear days. There are no dunes.
What it offers is space and quiet close to the city. Visitors come for camel rides, quad biking, horse riding, sunset and dinner at a camp, and some stay the night. Because it is so close, it fits into a short stay without giving up days of travel.
The Sahara: the dunes you picture
If you are picturing golden dunes, that is the Sahara, and in Morocco the most visited dunes are Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. They rise up to 150 m above the surrounding plain and stretch about 28 km from north to south. Getting there from Marrakech means crossing the High Atlas and driving about 10 hours, which is why we suggest at least three days. Which one should you choose?
- Choose Agafay if you have only a day or two in Marrakech, are travelling with small children who would find ten hours in a car hard, or simply want an evening in the desert without the long drive.
- Choose the Sahara if the dunes are the reason you are coming to Morocco, you have at least three days, and you would enjoy the road itself: the Atlas passes, the kasbahs and the valleys on the way.
- Do both if you have the time. They really are different experiences.
When to go
Both are at their best outside the summer heat. Agafay can reach around 38 to 42 °C in the middle of summer, and the most comfortable months for the Sahara dunes are October to April. Desert nights can be cold in winter, so bring a warm layer.
